Honoring Black History: Open Mic & Poetry Jam

Prior to contemporary matters of culture and equality, art was used in many of the same ways that it is used today in expression, storytelling and representation of everyday life. However, in honor of Black History Month we would like to acknowledge the contributions of African Americans to art from ancient to modern day.

Progressive works by writers and poets such as Paul Laurence Dunbar, Maya Angelou, Thomas Sayers Ellis and Gil Scott Heron have sparked revolutions, moments of self-actualization and enlightenment for all. While artists like Lena Horne, Edmond Dede, Mahlia Jackson and Duke Ellington set the tone for their eras in a way that has forever left a mark in not only Black History, but Music History overall. These and thousands of others have contributed tremendously to American history and the arts along with visual artists like Mildred Thompson and Billy Graham, artists of movement such as Gregory Hines and Lauren Anderson and those of the theatrical art including August Wilson and Hattie McDaniel.

So many people have more than stood for change by stimulating it through the arts and this month, just as we all should every day, RhapsoDee Entertainment Group would like to invite you to join us in Honoring Black History with Food, Arts and Fellowship.

We will be Honoring Black History Month with an Open Mic & Poetry Jam on Saturday, February 26, 2011 from 8pm – 10:30pm at Hessini Roots International Café (2044 Clinton St, Aurora, CO 80010). Sign-up will begin at 7:30pm and ALL arts are welcomed. Come wearing all black to get in free all night ($2 admission without black clothing).

No More Starving Artists Financial Planning Workshop

The “Starving Artist” motif is commonly understood across popular American culture and too often embraced as the romantic lifestyle of one who truly lives for their art. This stereotype is even expressed in caricatures of artists clutching cardboard signs and panhandling their darling works. In light of the current economic recession, everyone seems to be struggling. However, artists who are most often subject to the expendable income of others are finding themselves in especially dire straits.

According to Colorado's creative economy study, jobs in the Creative Industries grossed an estimated $5 million in 2008. However this number does not include most sole proprietors and startup artists. Nonetheless, small town poets, writers, visual artists, musicians and dancers shouldn’t have to find themselves struggling to make ends meet, living paycheck to paycheck or delaying projects with the hope of hitting the lottery.

In an effort to attack the typecasted lifestyle of “Starving Artists”, RhapsoDee Entertainment Group has partnered with Waddell & Reed to offer the free No More Starving Artist Financial Planning Workshop on January 29, 2010 from 1:00pm to 2:30pm in Aurora, Colorado. Ben Mossman, Financial Advisor of Waddell & Reed, will show local artists how to develop short and long term strategies for specific projects while managing cash flow, buffering savings and reducing financial burdens using real case studies and examples.

Join RhapsoDee Entertainment Group for this whirlwind presentation, Ben Mossman, Financial Advisor of Waddell & Reed, will use real case studies to illustrate tax and financial planning basics for artists and performers.
